Moonlight Silks

Since being established by Janet Lehwalder in 1984, Moonlight Silks has encompassed a wide variety of silk painting activities.

Her painting includes the creation of fine art silk paintings done in a watercolor style, luxurious quilted silk comforters, and a variety of other projects, some very large and some very small.

No less satisfying is introducing Silk Painting to new people.  Classes in the Serti Technique, with special focuses such as quilting and beading embellishment, greeting cards, and framing, are offered in many different venues.

Swiftcurrent Studios

Swiftcurrent Studios houses the working space for both
the fine art photography and film making of David Eisenhower, and the silk painting work of Janet Lehwalder.

Located six miles east of Bellingham, WA, off the Mt Baker Highway, it is a multipurpose space used for art making, classes, presentations, and other  gatherings of up to twenty people. Situated on five acres of open fields and shady forest, the ambiance encourages relaxation and clarity.

  1. “I paint on silk.
  2.
  3. I love the way
  4. silk’s natural luster
  5. adds light to the colors.
  6. I love the way you can choose among many surface textures.
  7. Silk is a strong vibrant
  8. natural fiber
  9. that is beautiful all by itself.”
  10.
  11. “I paint with dyes.
  12. Dyes permeate the whole fiber,
  13. displaying their color
  14. without hiding the character
  15. of the silk itself.
  16. They flow effortlessly.
  17. Taking advantage of this quality
  18. achieves the smooth blending
  19. and subtle shading
  20. that is characteristic
  21. of silk painting.
  22. And when a controlled line is desired,
  23. one of several types of resist
  24. can be used to define an area.”
  25.
  26. “I often work from photographs.
  27. I especially love
  28. the stories told by
  29. the body language
  30. of my subjects.
  31. Intricate color shading
  32. and distinctive line
  33. also create designs
  34. that attract me.”
  35.
  36. “Finally, I paint to connect with
  37. the best in the world.
  38. I notice a bit of beauty
  39. and want to honor it,
  40. to interact with it,
  41. to be able to revisit it
  42. again and again.”
